Atlas Shrugged

A while back, Allen and I were asked to do an illustration celebrating Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" for The Intellectual Activist. After we batted around a few ideas, we decided this was a good way to go. I'm a huge fan of Rand's literary work (though NOT a devout Objectivist) and this project turned out to be quite a challenge. We got a kick out of trying to re-intrepet a fascinating metaphor for individualistic freedom.

The beginning and end are set. What's in between is yours. Nothing is in vain, all is remembered. - Tyriel

I drew this rune today. Though denoting the P sound, the name "Peorð" is not comprehensible from Old English. Its actual meaning is not known. Nonetheless, it is said to be the rune of chance, gambling, Wyrd, fate, and unexpected outcomes.

Based on this, I see it as the rune of the mystery of life: you don't really know what's going to happen until you take a chance -- something I often remind myself of yet resist in the name of being sensible. I can't lose if I don't play, but I can't win either. Life seems to be a constant battle between these two forces, held in balance by walking a tightrope of opposing desires.

Frankly, I'm getting tired of this act. I'd rather drop everything today and go jump out of an airplane. THAT'S when you know you're really alive! But afterward of course it's back to the pointless, soul-sucking job that makes such an experience possible. WTF? I want to do work I enjoy.

Since I never really had the college experience, I'd like the opportunity to make discoveries of those subjects that are presently hidden from me. A lot of college-educated people say college is bullshit, that I don't need this type of experience, and I get that. But each of us is nurtured in different ways. College is no guarantee of anything, but for me going to class is its own reward. I'd rather be interacting with other humans learning things than sitting at home in front of a computer "getting a degree." I also perform better when there are assignments, deadlines, and a need for discipline which I struggle to impose upon myself. Though to my credit, I have been very good about going to the gym lately, and intend to keep that momentum going.

I would love to have the money to quit my job and be a full time student. I would live in either California or New Mexico. When I wasn't studying, I'd be going to the gym and paragliding. I wouldn't mind cranking out some kick ass guitar riffs again too. Seeing Sacred Reich reminded me of my former excellence. Though I'm not playing music these days, thrash metal will always be one of the most important pieces of my soul. I wouldn't be the person I am or have the friends I do without it. I'd also like to have the money to return to awesome places such as Iceland, for weeks or months at a time, sharing its intense splendor with those who already have the heart for it. This is the type of life I'd like to be living.

People have long criticized me for being "idealistic," as if there's something wrong with it, but my question is, "Why aren't you?" Existence should be poetic, majestic, epic -- a place where each human is a hero. The energy within us is meant to step into the real world and experiences its own sense of mastery and fulfillment.

That is my wish for all people.

The Zeitgeist Movement has no allegiance to a country or traditional political platforms. It views the world as a single system and the human species as a single family, and recognizes that all countries must disarm and learn to share resources and ideas if we expect to survive in the long run. Hence, the solutions arrived at and promoted are in the interest to help everyone on Earth, not a select group.

You Need A 1987 Ass Kicking

Awesome in every category. This is as good as it gets. The riff that kicks in at 2:43 is one of the greatest. I will always love this style of metal more than any other. Long live desert thrash!

Evil minds bend on destruction
Ignoring the pleas of their race
The final chapter in humanic abduction
All signs of society erased
People asking fewer questions
Letting politicians do their thinking
Not questioning nuclear judgment
As warheads enter our space

Our atmosphere clouded with poison
We're killing ourselves to live
Filling the world with hate and dissension
We'll have only our lives to give
What we do now is the key to the future
We'll only have ourselves to blame
For arming the world with the tools of destruction
Our ignorance means death

Warring on opposite nations
Starvation amongst impoverished nations
Outlook bleak for the world population
Ignorance of mankind
Clouding the world with residue
Of man's toxic industry
Slowly killing harmless victims
Whose ignorance leaves them dead

Our atmosphere clouded with poison
We're killing ourselves to live
Filling the world with hate and dissension
We'll have only our lives to give
What we do now is the key to the future
We'll only have ourselves to blame
For arming the world with the tools of destruction
Our ignorance means death

We're crowded with anger inventions of danger
From man's diabolical mind
Humanities dying no use in trying
It's only a matter of time
How long will it be before there's no air to breathe
And our water is polluted waste
Ignorance runs rampant no one is caring
Suicide of the human race

Where Did The Oil Go?

To The Universe

The me I am
is not the me I want to be
The place I am
is not the place I want to be
The job I have
is not what I want to do

The reason I'm here
can never be revealed
can never be served
unless I am free

I seek my own path
not others
mine is the spirit
of an independent warrior
unafraid to walk alone

I wish to thrive in the place of my source
to be who I am
to see
and experience
the essence of my life

I wish to fulfill my purpose
to embrace my divine heritage
and face the invincible spirit of existence

I want a fresh start in a new land
I want to ride out to the horizon
and see through the eyes of the real me

I want to stand tall
breathe deep
and speak my truth to the sky and wind

There is an "I" in Universe
Here I am

Alla Fine

Of course. There is no money to keep the Symphony going, but there's $53.5 million dollars for the new "Battlespace Exploration Laboratory" over at Kirtland AFB. I'm not surprised. This is typical of America's continually failing value selection system. If you have dedicated your life to music and the cultural edification of your fellow man, too bad. Go eat a laser.

Truth and honor faith and pride
All convictions surely died
Honesty's time has passed
Time for lies is here at last

Truth is false I'm so fed up
How did we come to be so fucked?!
 Hate fear pain death
All our country has got left

Talk to children hear them say
Daddy left again today
Brother steals and mommy lies
Future lost before their eyes

The sun was lost behind the clouds
They wrapped it up and blacked it out
Acid rain fell today
It came and washed our hopes away

This was once the land of dreams
Now these dreams have turned to greed
In the midst of all this wealth
The poor are left to help themselves

A capitalist's democracy
Why no one said that freedom's free
Lady liberty rots away
No truth
No justice
The American Way

Don't look past your TV
All of us are what we see
A looking glass into our lives
What we watch is what we buy
Priorities are out of whack
Who is next to stab our back
Doesn't it make you mad to have lost all that we've had

This was once the land of dreams
Now these dreams have turned to greed
In the midst of all this wealth
The poor are left to help themselves

A capitalist's democracy
Why no one said that freedom's free
Lady liberty rots away
No truth
No justice
The American Way

Doesn't it fill you with disgust
That there's no one left to trust
Is this happening?
Is this real?
My body numb I cannot feel

Are you happy are you sad?
Are emotions a thing of the past?
I have no tears I cannot cry
No one mourns for a world that's died

This was once the land of dreams
Now these dreams have turned to greed
In the midst of all this wealth
The poor are left to help themselves

A capitalist's democracy
Why no one said that freedom's free
Lady liberty rots away
No truth
No justice
The American Way

Hydrogen Economy

Hurray For The President

"In (the) previous twenty or thirty years, we have had a system in the western world where the markets, the financial markets were paramount, and somehow the democratic elements of our societies were put aside. We have forgotten that there are two pillars of the western heritage that we are proud of. One is the evolution of the free market, but the second is the evolution of democracy. And what I did when I was faced with a decision between the financial concerns on one hand and democracy on the other, I decided to go with democracy."

The Path of Disappearance

Mastery of invisibility leads to the understanding of existence through its opposite: non-existence.

Darkness is not darkness.

Progressive Abandonment

At the center, all power is to be found and equilibrium is a desirable attainment. This practice eventually leads to the practitioner no longer requiring a single right or wrong answer to the mysteries and many truths can exist complimentary to one another. No one single belief or viewpoint is sufficient and so all beliefs and viewpoints can be progressively abandoned. In the stillness and silent questioning of the mind that is left behind, all truth resounds.

~ Tyriel

There is always a price to pay. Every decision you make requires the acceptance of one thing and simultaneous sacrifice or release of another.

Theaters Where Atlas Shrugged Is Playing

Trip To Astral Norway

Man is never alone. Acknowledged or unacknowledged, that which dreams through him is always there to support him from within.

~Laurence van der Post

A dream...

I wake up in a bed in the guestroom of a Norwegian farm house where I am being nursed back to health by a very nice old couple who lives here. I try to remember what has happened but can't. Amnesia? Car wreck? I shrug off the unknowable, relieved not to have any bad memories. I look at the white blanket on the bed, the wooden walls around me and realize I feel pretty good. Whatever has happened is over. I am recovered. It's light out and there's that good feeling of wanting to get up and embrace whatever the new day holds in store.

I get out of bed, either already in my clothes or not requiring them, and go outside. I see the old couple working in the garden with a younger couple who is helping them. What most stands out to me is that they are down in the soil and have a glowing happy quality about them. Their auras are sunny yellow. We communicate without speaking. It's a feeling of mutual understanding and good will. Like when you acknowledge someone with a slight bow. They know without me saying so how grateful I am to them for taking care of me, and I know without them saying so that it's all quite alright. Like a "thank you" and "you're welcome" exchanged at the same time. It's a nice sunny day and seeing the beautiful forests again reminds me of Finland. Ah, Scandinavia! So beautiful and clean!

True to my nature, I start feeling restless and ready to go somewhere. My hosts, I notice, have suddenly vanished and I'm alone outside. No need to belabor the gratitude, I guess. Or maybe it's naptime. Shrugging my shoulders, I get into a parked car next to me and drive away without trying to find anyone or say goodbye. I spend a couple hours on a road with long sweeping corners and no other traffic, again marveling at the beautiful forests. I keep thinking how much my friends will enjoy this place when they come to visit me. But visit me where? The farmhouse? Hm, maybe I live t/here.

I suddenly feel kind of bad for not saying goodbye to the nice people at the farmhouse, so I turn around and drive back, unaware that maybe they are my family. Along the way I'm forced to drive through some slow winding construction area marked with orange cones that weren't there before. Naturally, there are no workers to accompany the jobsite. Same as the States! After this, I stop at a labyrinth of white corrugated metal, like that stuff they make storage units or ship containers out of. It has an annoying Home Depot feel inside, because I go in and wander around looking for some guy who can help me find some thing, and it seems to take forever.

I leave with a completely unremarkable piece of flat squarish wood, about the size of a small table, for no obvious reason. When I get back to the farm, everyone is outside working just as before, smiling and happy, evidently not concerned in the slightest that I've left, or am even back for that matter. No one asks why I'm standing there like a dummy with a random piece of wood in my hands. I get the feeling they already know everything I could say anyway. Oh well. A gift demands a gift, so I give it to the old man and he says "Thank you," indicating that he's putting it aside for future use. I'm still wondering what it is. Maybe a big blank rune.

I get down in the soil with everyone else. I see them as my ancestors, the greater family of man. I am happy to be with them, to have emerged from another long winter, victorious...for now. The days are long but the growing season is short, and the harvest comes soon. Despite thin soil and rocky terrain, sun streams down through pure air. This place that I am is fertile, a land of tall green trees, good people and strong roots. I look at the seeds in my hand and breathe life into them. It's planting time.

I stood before the rock
freezing wind burnt my face
and shook the hand of a noble man
in the heart of an ancient place

Where the land tears itself apart
we will come together

to work things out
make important decisions
and breathe the clean air of our ancestors

It is an honor to be here
an honor to exist

This is the place of destiny
where men decide their fate

The 1st Amendment Has Moved

Iceland seeks to become sanctuary for free speech.

Having recently returned from Reykjavik, I can tell you that if you hear a rap song with foul language on Icelandic radio, you actually get to hear the foul language. This makes hearing 2Pac, for example, infinitely more gratifying than here in the "land of the free." I'm not making a case for everyone to go around fucking swearing all the time (sic), but one of the defining virtues of a society worth living in is its recognition of that which is inviolable.

From Article 19 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

Thanks to Iceland for recognizing and striving to uphold this most basic principle. Where liberty dwells, there is my country.

SOWILO (Sol) -- a rune of self-orientation and guidance toward the light. Used to strengthen the will. Invokes the solar power of victory, success, and illumination. Promotes spiritual will power and self-confidence. Draws the energy of the sun into the personal sphere. Represents clarity of sight and the victory of good over evil. Confronting The Union

Position and appearances are irrelevant. The important thing is to carry out our personal duty, our commitment, no matter what anyone else may say. This is a life of true victory, a life of unsurpassed nobility and fulfillment.

~ Daisaku Ikeda

The victory rune. Brings victory in contests, trials, and legal judgements. An upholder of faith, steadfastness, and honor, and increases loyalty to higher ideals. Strengthens confidence during ordeals and competition; invokes justice; maintains order; sustains promises and oaths; and brings a lawful outcome. In healing, speeds recuperation. Cannot be used to pervert justice. Carve on any weapon to be used for right justice.
